How a community credit union’s approach to becoming a digital-first provider helped them grow

The University of Illinois Community Credit Union (UICCU), with its nearly century-long history, encountered significant hurdles in its digital transformation journey. Despite offering online banking services for a long time, UICCU realized in 2019 that more was needed, including taking a more proactive approach to members’ digital needs, providing the right resources, and empowering staff with better tools. The credit union aimed to evolve into a digital-first provider, striving to deliver seamless user experiences for its diverse membership, which includes university students, faculty, and consumers.

UICCU’s partnership with Lumin Digital was not just about upgrading technology; it also marked a significant cultural transformation within the organization. In 2020, UICCU established a dedicated digital department to drive innovation and empower staff and members to embrace the new platform, demonstrating its commitment to change and innovation. As a result, the credit union realized a 57% increase in mobile check deposits and a 4.8 app store rating within six months of launch, 85% of logins are mobile, a 38% increase in checking accounts opened online, and more.
